First Aid 19/04/2018
Our First Aid course started on Monday first day back from Easter holidays and was three days long and ended with a test on the Wednesday and a practical assessment. The first challenge of the course was trying to find where we were supposed to be I went down to the sports hall and after some searching eventually found my class in the gym room, the last place I did and would of checked. The class wasn't that large, I would say about 17 people and the instructor. We all were given theses nice books with all the information we need in them and she started teaching from the start of the book. Some of the things I knew but other things were new and interesting.
On the second day, it was all about slings and CPR. We got started off with elevation slings used for patient who have broken their collar bone or their ribs. The sling helps keep pressure off of the ribs by holding the arm out of the way and hopefully stopping further damage. After break, we came back and started to do the long-armed sling in case the patient has broken the bones in their arm the radius, ulna, humerus or there elbow. Then just before lunch, she gave us out CPR face masks and showed us the dummies we would be working with. We all came back from lunch, and tried to revive the dummies although many people did the exercise perfectly the patients were too far gone to be successfully saved.
On the final day we did lots of revision of the previous two days material and then had a 22 question written test all about first aid and first responders. We then also had our practical examination were we had to perform cpr and mack the two slings perfectly. I did fairly well in both I think and got a good grade over all. I enjoyed my time doing the course and think it will be a valuable resource throughout my life.
